Fire Protection FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

.
Q: What is the cost?
A: We measure the floor area from overhang to overhang, calculate normal floor area and then multiply that with 1.45 (the average angle of a thatch roof). This is the total thatch area.

.
Q: What are the benefits of Fire Guard?

A: Fire Guard is a fire retardant that guards your thatch against fungus, UV light and bird damage – extending the life of your thatch. Fire Guard slows the rate of spreading of flames – reducing the fire to a shoulder. This will give you more time to evacuate the building or put the fire out.

.
Q: How long does your product last?

A: Fire Guard has been tested by independent labs to last at least 7 years. We prescribe re-application between 5-7 years as this is necessary for insurance purposes.

.

Q: Does Fire Guard replace the need for a lightning mast?

A: This depends on your insurer. Some insurance companies require that you fire protect your thatch and put up a lightning mast. A point to note is that a lightning mast only protects against lightning, not veld fires or braai fires.

.

Q: Do you apply Fire Guard to the inside & outside?

A: Yes, we apply Fire Guard to the inside and the outside. We treat the outside with 2-4 liters per m2 and 1-3 liters per m2 on the inside.

.
Q: Will my Local municipality or insurance company accept the certificate of completion after treatment?
Yes, all local municipalities and most insurance companies accept our certificates.
